A Parent's Blessing
Today is my mother’s birthday. She would have been 65 years old. Although I planned some things to celebrate her, I kept my routine of morning devotions. This morning I read Genesis 26. In this chapter, we see the narrative of Genesis shift its focus from Abraham (who died in Genesis 25) to Isaac. One reoccurring theme stood out to me, that is, God was blessing Isaac because of Abraham, Isaac’s father. In Genesis 26:3-6, the Lord said, “Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; because Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws." So Isaac lived in Gerar.” In Genesis 26:24-25, the Lord said, “I am the God of your father Abraham; Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you, and multiply your descendants, For the sake of My servant Abraham." So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well.” In Genesis 26:28-29, we notice how other people saw Isaac’s blessings. “They said, "We see plainly that the LORD has been with you; so we said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, even between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.'"” So Isaac was blessed as a result of Abraham’s relationship with God. God favored Abraham’s descendants because he walked faithfully with God by trusting God and obeying God’s words. Like Isaac, I know the pain of a parent’s death. My mother was born on February 7th and passed on February 11th. Instead of my usual days of roller coaster emotions during this week, I will think about the blessings I have because of her. As I conclude this blog, the first blessing that comes to mind is life. My mother and father (who is still with me) gave me life. This blessing made all my other blessings possible. Though life is not always easy, praise God for parents who blessed me with the opportunity to live on this earth and enjoy God and all of his riches. I am grateful for a parent’s blessing!
